When the diagnosis is diabetes, what’s next? FREE expo with panel of experts

The Diabetes Center at McLaren Macomb will host a free diabetes education event offering the latest information on preventing and managing diabetes to reduce complications. The annual Diabetes Expo will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2013,1 p.m. to 3 p.m., in McLaren Macomb’s medical education auditorium (on the hospital’s lower level, east tower).

A panel of physicians will discuss the latest information on how diabetes relates to other medical conditions, especially heart disease, the nervous system and the digestive tract.

“ With diabetes, even small changes in diet and exercise can help prevent or delay some of the complications.”

Panelists will include:
After the panel discussion, professionals from McLaren Health Care will be on hand
to answer questions about new Medicare rules regarding where to get test strips, glucometers and other medical equipment.

In addition, other health professionals will provide information about medications, foot care, shoes, medical devices, healthy eating, skin care, sleep issues, weight loss surgery and more.

There are several uncontrollable risk factors that can lead to diabetes, including age, ethnicity and a family history of diabetes. Risk factors that can be modified and often controlled include excess weight, inactivity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels and high levels of triglycerides.

“With diabetes, even small changes in diet and exercise can help prevent or delay some of the complications,” said Yvonne Thigpen, registered dietitian and manager of Integrated Health at McLaren Macomb. “Such changes can have a big impact on blood sugar levels and overall health.”

The Diabetes Expo is free as part of McLaren Macomb's commitment to a healthier community. However, guests are encouraged to register and arrive early as seats fill quickly.
