Welcoming orthopedic oncologist Dr. Brian Walczak

Expert subspecialist is one of only a few in Michigan

Though orthopedic oncology is a highly specialized area of medicine, McLaren Macomb has—for years—offered a comprehensive range of these services close to home.

At this time, we’re pleased to announce that Brian Walczak, DO, will oversee the orthopedic oncology program at the Ted B. Wahby Cancer Center.

Dr. Walczak, one of only a handful of orthopedic oncologists practicing in the entire state, replaces Dr. Ronald Irwin, who recently retired after leading the program for approximately six years, from 2007 to 2013.

“Dr. Walczak is an expert in orthopedic oncology services and will be a tremendous asset to the program,” said Dr. Irwin, a long-trusted orthopedic oncologist at McLaren Macomb. “With his leadership, I’m confident that the center will continue to provide patients with cutting-edge orthopedic oncology treatments and sophisticated cancer-fighting technologies.”

A highly trained and skilled subspecialist, Dr. Walczak completed a residency in orthopedic surgery in conjunction with McLaren Health Care, as well as a fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at the Mayo Clinic. He received his medical education from Midwestern University in Chicago.
“I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to provide state-of-the-art orthopedic oncology services to residents of our community and beyond,” said Dr. Walczak. “Each patient in need of these services is different and has specific needs. I look forward to helping ensure that all patients receive individualized treatments and personalized care.”

McLaren Macomb’s orthopedic oncology program incorporates surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as necessary, to treat a comprehensive range of malignant bone and soft-tissue tumors. Treatment is also provided for metastatic diseases, which are cancers that originate from other parts of the body (such as the lung, breast or prostate) and spread to the bone. In addition, the program offers care for a variety of benign (noncancerous) tumors.
