The answer is the kitchen sink (5)!

The kitchen sink, dish towels and sponges in particular seem to be the dirtiest part of the kitchen in terms of bacteria.

According to a study by NSF International, sponges pick up bacteria during the cleaning process and are typically not properly - or regularly - sanitized before their next use. Additionally, sponges are often wet and left in damp areas in or near the sink, providing optimal conditions for germ growth.
Other areas of concern around the kitchen include:

  • Refrigerator vegetable compartment
  • Refrigerator meat compartment
  • Blender gaskets
  • Can opener
  • Rubber spatula
  • Food storage container with rubber seal
